In Hong Kong, people suffering from schizophrenia and their families lacked the medication and support they needed to better manage their mental illness and cope with the stigma associated with it. The Hong Kong Association of Psychoanalysis Rehabilitation (HKAPR) needed advocacy support to push legislation in order to make available more effective medication to sufferers, increase the case manager-to-patient ratio, and ensure caregivers are provided with ample support. We mounted a multi-faceted lobbying and awareness campaign that involved all stakeholders in the issue: patients, families, lawmakers, and even a Hollywood stuntwoman! This led to deeper understanding of the plight of schizophrenia patients in Hong Kong. The Hong Kong government subsequently increased the number case managers and set up a committee to improve on the provision of medicine and support to caregivers. A dedicated Facebook page to promote de-stigmatization about mental illnesses has proved extremely popular attesting to the sheer but previously unrecognized demand for what is a vital source of help.
